Do I need a permit for a marquee in my garden?
For a private party in your own garden, no. A temporary structure up for less than 28 days doesn't need planning permission, and our £5m public liability cover applies to private premises.
If you're hosting friends and family at home, you don't need to tell anyone. Marquees and gazebos count as temporary structures, and a temporary structure in a private garden for under 28 days in a year is permitted development. No application, no fee.
Where it changes:
Selling alcohol (even a paid bar at a private party) needs a Temporary Event Notice from the council. About £21, ten working days' notice. We'll tell you if your plan needs one.
Music late: there's no fixed curfew for a private garden, but amplified music after 11pm is where neighbours call the council. A word with them beforehand goes a long way.
Public land, village greens, church halls: the landowner's rules apply, and they'll usually want our insurance certificate and risk assessment. We have both ready.
Insurance: our £5m public liability covers the build on private premises. Your home insurance is unaffected; a gazebo in the garden for a weekend isn't a change to the property.

We had a company let us down. We called Moments Covered and they came and saved the day. Even though it was the last part of their busy working day, it didn't matter, they rocked up at 9pm in the evening and rescued us.
From lights to flowers they made the marquee look amazing and nothing was too much trouble. From the first visit to help us plan, the set up and take down was first class. They took all the worry out of the day. If we could give them six stars we would.
The gazebos looked fantastic and were set up perfectly, with carpet and lighting. They don't stop at gazebos, they can also supply furniture, glassware and more. The gazebos are extremely robust and did not move in the wind and rain. They created a lovely warm and cosy atmosphere, and our guests were comfortable throughout the evening. And at a very reasonable price.
We used Henry for my husband's 40th garden birthday party and they were amazing. Very professional, great value for money, will definitely recommend and we will use them again soon.
